Make sure it's a warm, dry day (above 10°C) and the wood is clean and dry. To prepare stained or varnished wood, sand the wood to remove the existing stain or varnish. Use 120 grit sandpaper and work in a circular motion to remove the varnish or stain. Then use white spirit and a cloth to wipe down the excess dust and clean the surface. To prepare new wood for varnishing, lightly sand it with 120 grit sandpaper to remove any surface imperfections then wipe down the dust with white spirit and a cloth.
